Michigan is a beautiful state, rich in wildlife and diverse
landscapes, where more than one million men and women hunt an
amazing diversity of game each year. Whether it's big game, small
game or waterfowl that you seek, Michigan's two scenic peninsulas
provide nearly eight million acres of public hunting land,
including more than 4.5 million acres managed by the Michigan
Department of Natural Resources. The DNR also leases more than
35,000 acres of farmland in southern Michigan for public hunting,
and nearly 2.2. million acres of private forestland in northern
Michigan, enrolled as commercial forests, provide even more
hunting access.
Michigan leads
the nation in the number of days of deer hunting recreation, and
the annual average harvest over the past five years has exceeded
500,000 deer. The most popular small game species are cottontail
rabbits, squirrels, pheasants and ruffed grouse.
Hunters spend
nearly 4.4 million hunter-days afield in pursuit of these species.
Goose and duck hunting also are increasing in popularity. The
annual harvest of Canada geese now exceeds 180,000 birds and more
than 400,000 ducks are harvested during a 60-day duck season.
