MONTANA HUNTING:
Welcome to Montana, where
one-quarter of the state population hunts. Montana is truly a
hunter's paradise. If you are passionate about pursuing the
majestic elk, the elusive whitetail, the roaming pronghorn
antelope, the secretive mountain lion, or the flighty sharp-tailed
grouse, Montana may provide you with a hunt of a lifetime.
This is possible because of the generations of dedicated hunters
who took it upon themselves to restore once depleted species and
habitats. Today, the Big Sky country teams with an abundance and
diversity of wildlife. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, with
hunters as our partners, is committed to the stewardship of these
diverse resources and the quality of recreational opportunities
important to Montanans and our guests. It is our sincere desire to
share these opportunities with you.
One of the
key ingredients for achieving satisfaction is to adequately
prepare and set attainable expectations for your hunt. Here are
some observations and information that will help you in planning a
hunt. The vastness and remoteness of Montana often surprises
hunters new to the state. At times, harsh and quickly changing
weather conditions can challenge even the most experienced. Most
of the big game hunting, for example, occurs in November-in the
deep of Montana's winter. Outdoor skills are an absolute must.
Also, two-thirds of Montana is privately owned, interspersed by
large tracts of state and federal lands. Orienteering skills are
of tremendous value to avoid ending up in the wrong place. As of
1999, all forms of hunting on private land require landowner
permission. In preparing for your hunt, please request a recent
copy of the hunting regulations and check out our website for some
the information you'll need. Outstanding books and maps are now
available that will give you valuable information on wildlife,
land, and the people that make up Montana's great hunting
environment.
Big Game Hunting -
The majority of North American big game species find suitable
habitat in Montana and their populations allow for some
recreational hunting. Montana is home to Rocky Mountain bighorn
sheep, mountain goat, moose, elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer,
pronghorn antelope, black bear, and mountain lion. For details on
licensing applications, hunting seasons, and hunting areas please
review information on our website and the hunting regulation
pamphlet, which you may request. Hunting seasons vary considerably
among species, starting as early as mid-September. Special
archery-only seasons have been established in some of the regions.
Game Birds - Montana is gaining popularity among
resident and nonresidents upland game bird hunters who pursue the
sharp-tailed grouse, Hungarian partridge, pheasant, and sage
grouse in the vast prairie habitats of Big Sky country. Seasons
for most of these species start as early as September and end by
mid-December. Hunting of waterfowl is popular as well, especially
later in autumn when the northern flights arrive. Many of the
waterfowl seasons don't close until early January. Again, our
website and the hunting regulation pamphlet, as well as excellent
reference books on habitats and hunting techniques, will help you
immensely in planning your hunt and in achieving the satisfaction
you come to expect from a state as wild and diverse as Montana.
