HUNTING NEW HAMPSHIRE:
New Hampshire is fortunate to still have an abundance of privately-owned
property open to hunting. Additionally, thousands of acres of state and
federal lands are available. Deer seasons are generous. Bowhunters enjoy a 3-month archery
season (Sept. 15-Dec. 15), and those who use muzzleloaders have
a special 11-day season (Oct. 30-Nov. 9) before the regular
firearms season opens. The regular season is Nov. 10 through
December 5. The state is sectioned into wildlife management
units (WMUs), within which specific dates are given when either
sex or antlered only deer may be taken. With the proper licenses
and special permits, a hunter may take up to four deer in a
season.
Other big game species in New Hampshire are black bear, wild
turkey and moose. Turkeys may be hunted with firearms in the
spring, and by bow in the fall. A 9-day moose season in October
is open to resident and nonresident hunters, with participants
selected by a lottery.
Popular small game species are rabbit, hare and ruffed grouse.
Northern New Hampshire is generally the best area to hunt these.
Migratory game birds, gray squirrel, and pheasant are also
widely sought.
