NEW YORK
HUNTING:
Hunting is among the most popular forms of wildlife
recreation in New York State. Nearly 700,000 New Yorkers
and over 50,000 nonresidents hunt in the Empire State.
New York offers many exciting opportunities to hunt a
large variety of wildlife, including big game, small game,
game birds and furbearers. We have more
than 80 state owned Wildlife Management Areas scattered across the
state, containing 124,000 acres of upland and 53,000 acres of
wetland. Through cooperative agreements, Fish and Wildlife
Management Act cooperative areas provide access and management
services to privately owned lands to increase public hunting
opportunities. Many recreational activities can be pursued on
nearly 3.6 million acres of state forests and forest preserves.
New York offers more than 325 state-owned boat launching areas,
and we have secured public fishing rights on more than 1200 miles
of the best streams and rivers. National Wildlife Refuges are
located in the Finger Lakes and Long Island areas.
Big game hunting is really BIG when you come to New York State.
There are two major hunting zones, with different regulations,
called simply the Northern and Southern Zones. Deer numbers are
higher in the Southern Zone because of better range conditions and
milder winter weather. It is an intensively managed area for deer
but it also provides great bow hunting opportunities. The Northern
Zone is a sharp contrast and offers an exciting variety of "low
pressure" hunting conditions from rural to wilderness. Older aged
bucks can be found in many areas of the Northern Zone and within
some of the bow only areas of the Southern Zone.
