There are a huge variety of Trout that people enjoy fishing. There are dozens of species and sub species and some are actually salmon, but called trout. Trout are cold water fish and eat insects, so that makes them a very popular game fish for Fly Fishing. The most common varieties are:

• Brown Trout (mostly freshwater, avg size about 2 lbs)
• Brook Trout (Biggest one – 14.5 lbs, avg size up to 7 lbs)
• Lake Trout (can grow to be a BIG Trout – record 102 lbs!)
• Cutthroat Trout (known by the bright red throat area)
• Steelhead Trout (sea run trout, returning to freshwater for spawning)
• Dozens of sub-species, because the trout enjoy each other’s company


Fly fishing for Trout is hugely popluar, but certainly not the only way to catch a trout! Lures and live bait can also be effective.
