VIRGINIA HUNTING:
Virginia has an abundance of hunting opportunities. No matter
where you might live in the Commonwealth, you can be in prime
hunting country within the hour. Since 1916, the Virginia
Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has been serving the
state's outdoor public. The Department owns over 180,000 acres
of Wildlife Management Areas that provide a rich variety of
wildlife habitat. These lands are located throughout the
Commonwealth from the Atlantic Coast cord grass marshes to the
bold mountaintops of southwestern Virginia. The Department also
works cooperatively with the U. S. Forest Service to help manage
over one and a half million acres of wildlife habitat on
national forest lands in Virginia.
The state boasts a deer population of nearly a million animals
and the most liberal deer hunting seasons ever known in the
Commonwealth. Turkey populations are also higher than ever
recorded. The black bear population is very healthy as well.
In Virginia, all first-time hunters and anyone from age 12 to 15
years old will have to demonstrate that they have successfully
completed an approved hunter education course before they can
buy a hunting license. Persons 16 years old or older will be
exempted if they have held a hunting license in prior years.
Virginia recognizes all other states' and countries' hunter
education programs.
When hunting any game species during a general firearms deer
season, every hunter and person accompanying a hunter is
required to wear a blaze orange hat or blaze orange upper body
clothing that is visible from 360 degrees or display at least
100 square inches of solid blaze orange material at shoulder
level within body reach and visible from 360 degrees.
