WYOMING HUNTING:
With only 470,000 human residents on 99,000 square miles, Wyoming
has a lot of room to offer a great variety of hunting.
Wyoming is one of the nation's premier big game states. There are
about as many
antelope in Wyoming as people. There are nearly that many
mule deer. Elk have been doing so well (population
approximately 125,000) that hunters can get an extra cow/calf
license in some areas.
In addition, the Cowboy State offers white-tailed deer,
Shiras moose,
bighorn sheep and 12-16 mountain goat licenses
annually.
Firearm licenses allow hunters to also archery hunt during a
special early season. There are no special muzzleloader or pistol
seasons in Wyoming. Hunters wishing to hunt with muzzleloaders or
handguns must do so during the regular firearm season.
Black Bears and mountain
lions are also hunted in most areas of the state. Licenses are valid
for all hunt areas, but individual hunt areas close for the season when
the harvest limit is reached. Hunters can call a toll-free phone number
24-hours a day to find out the status of hunt areas. Coyotes can
be hunted year round without a license.
Wyoming offers the continent's best hunting for sage grouse and
good hunting for sharp-tailed,
blue and ruffed grouse, along with chukar and
Hungarian partridge. Ducks, geese and some sandhill
cranes are decoyed in both the Central and Pacific flyways in
Wyoming. There are a few counties offering wild pheasant hunting
and two state operated pheasant farms stock some controlled hunts.
Turkey hunting, both spring and fall, is becoming more popular every
year. The Black Hills in the northeast corner of the state offers the
greatest concentration of turkeys. Merriam's are the predominate
subspecies with a few areas of recently introduced Rio Grande turkeys.
BIG GAME HUNTING: Wyoming's seasons open on a variety of dates from
September through November. Nonresident elk applications must be
received Jan. 1 * 31; deer and antelope Jan. 1 * March 15; moose and
bighorn sheep Jan. 1 * Feb. 28. The application period for a second
drawing of leftover elk, deer and antelope licenses is July 10 *20.
Contact the WGFD for an application booklet and more information.
Bird Hunting:
Seasons vary by species in the Cowboy State. Most turkey licenses are
issued by drawing. Most years spring turkey licenses in the Black Hills
can be purchased over the counter. Some permits for controlled goose,
pheasant and sandhill crane hunting are issued by drawing. Contact the
WGFD for more bird hunting information.
